Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the leader who brought forward the concept of National Security Advisor when he was the prime minister of India. His government has created NSA post on 19 November 1998 and appointed Brejesh Mishra as the first National Security Adviser of India.
Position and duties of National Security Adviser:-
- National Security Adviser (NSA)is the Chief Executive of the National Security Council (NSC) of the nation.
- He is the main adviser to the Prime Minister of India on national and international security.
- India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Intelligence Bureau and other central Intelligency Agencies supposed to report to the National Security Adviser rather than reporting to Prime Minister directly.
- Advise Prime Minister matters relating to internal and external threats to the country.
- Work as a Special Interlocutor of the Prime Minister on border issues with China.
- Accompany with the Prime Minister whenever he is proceeding for the overseas visits.
- Oversea the strategic issues.

Prior to becoming fifth National Security Adviser of India, he was working as an IPS Officer as well as the head of Indian Intelligence Bureau.
He went to Pakistan as a spy without having diplomatic immunity. From Pakistan he has succeeded in infiltrating Khalistani Terrorist Organizations pretending to be an ISI Officer. He served in Pakistan as an undercover agent for a period of 7 years.
During his stay in Pakistan, if he was caught then he might have faced worst ever torture from Pakistan authorities which nobody can imagine.
Ajit Doval is a courageous person and he can be termed as India’s best National Security Advisor. He is widely known as “Indian James Bond”.
Considering his outstanding contributions towards India, he was awarded Kirti Chakra by the government of India.
Ajit Dovel was one of the main instrumentals who have negotiated negotiating with the Afghan based terrorist group that have hijacked Indian passenger plane IC-814 and taken to Kandahar in 1999. His vehement efforts finally succeeded in releasing the entire passengers.
He has actively taken part anti insurgency operations in Mizoram and Punjab.
In June 2014, he has played an important role in securing 46 Indian nurses who were trapped in a hospital in Tikrit, Iraq soon after the Islamic State military group captured the entire Mosul area.
Prior to securing these nurses, Ajit Doval secretly flown to Iraq to chalk out an appropriate rescue plan, understand the ground situation of Mosul and the hospital where the nurses were trapped.
While he was in Iraq, he maintained good communication with the Islamic state as well as the government of Iraq that have ensured the release of Indian Nurses from Mosul.
In June 2015, Indian commandos has carried out a massive cross border counter insurgency operations at Indo Burmese border and killed more than 35 Separatists of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland.
Ajit Doval was the main instrumental in planning and executing this operation along with former Indian army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag. This mission was highly successfully and the separatists has learned bitter lesson at the hands of Indian military.
He is the one who has changed India’s national security policy from “Defensive” to “Defensive Offensive” as well as the “Double Squeeze Strategy”. His Defensive Offensive policy is now working very well with our hostile neighbor Pakistan they are now scared of India, its military and it’s diplomatic might.
Ajit Doval’s brain was behind the surgical strike Indian commandos carried out at Pakistan Occupied Kashmir in 2016.
He has worked shoulder to shoulder with foreign secretary S. Jayashankar and the Indian ambassador in China Vijay Keshav Gokhale and successfully resolved 75 days Dokhlam standoff between India and Chinese military in 2018.
He was actively involved in planning and executing of the cross border airstrike Indian military carried out at Balakot just after Pak sponsored militants attacked and killed 40 CRPF Jawan at Pulwama.
Apart from that he was one of the main instrumentals in releasing the captured Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman from Pak military custody.
In May 2020, Doval has carried out extensive negotiations with Burmese Government and his vehemented and unrelented effort has forced Burmese government to hand over the 20 hard core insurgents who was actively carrying out anti Indian operation in Assam and North east states.
