Shashi Tharoor is now a renowned Indian National Congress party leader, Member of Parliament and he was a career international diplomat. He became Under Secretary General of the United Nations when Kofi Annan was the Secretary General of the United Nations.
Shashi Tharoor was born in London and grew up in India. In 1975, he has completed his graduation from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He has completed his higher studies in 1978 with a doctorate in International Relations and Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.
Shashi Tharoor began his career at United Nations in 1978 and he worked with United Nations for a period of 23 years. During this period he worked with U.N. in various positions that are given below:-
- From 1981 to 1984 – He was head of the UNHCR office in Singapore, during crisis, for which he led the organization’s rescue efforts at sea and succeeded in resettling a backlog of Vietnamese refugees.
- From 1985 to 1989 – He was the Deputy chief of the UNHCR Secretariat
- From 1989 to 1996 – Special assistant for the United States and UN for peacekeeping
- From 1997 to 2000 – Executive assistant to the secretary-general
- From 2001 to 2007 – Under-secretary-general for communications and public information.
- In 2006 Shashi Tharoor was Indiaâs official candidate for the post of secretary-general in 2006. He got widespread support from the Asian Group as well as from African Group. As majorities of five Veto power countries selected Ban Ki Moon of South Korea as their consensus candidate for the post U.N. Secretary General, Shashi Tharoor could not be able to succeed in winning the election. Subsequently Shashi Tharoor resigned from the UN and became the chairman of an investment company based in the emirate of Dubai.
Shashi Tharoor joined in Indian National Congress party. Since then he has been contesting from Trivandrum Parliamentary constituency and winning the election continuously in a comfortable margin.- He was appointed as the External Affairs Minister (State) in the Manmohan Singh lead United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
- He is a renowned writer as well as an author of many best selling fictions and non-fiction books. He is a good orator and one of the best parliamentarians in India. He got a tremendous ability to use the high standard English which seldom people are having such capability.
- Shashi Tharoor is a truly genius, sheer intelligent, highly versatile , revered as a legendary orator, an able leader, a master debater and his wide range knowledge in international politics is highly astonishing. Ever since he joined in the Indian National Congress, Shashi Tharoor never played vote bank politics. But has been continuously winning from Trivandrum Parliamentary constituency. Young and elder voters from his parliamentary constituency are overwhelmingly casting their franchise in favour of Shashi Tharoor whenever he is contesting.
