Shashi Tharoor’s image boosted after acquitting from criminal case
Just after seven years Sunanda Pushkar found dead in a hotel room, a Delhi court discharged renowned Congress party leader Shashi Tharoor in a case of abetment to suicide and cruelty.
Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a five-star hotel room in Delhi on 17th January 2014. Since then Shashi Tharoor was booked under IPC sections 498-A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide).
Soon after her death, Shashi Tharoor faced widespread problems from the politicians, investigation agencies and medias and they have accused that the Shashi Tharoor was behind of her death.
Shashi Tharoor is an important leader of Indian National Congress party leader and he has been the Member of Parliament from May 2009 to till date. He has been winning from this constituency during the past three elections.
Prior to joining in the Congress party, he was a career diplomat and he became Under Secretary General of the United Nations when Kofi Annan was the Secretary General of the United Nations.
Shashi Tharoor was born in London in 1956. He has completed his graduation in 1975 from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He has completed PhD in 1978 at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, U.S.A.
He has started his career at United Nations in 1978 and he worked with U.N. for a period of 23 years. During his period, he held various positions, some of which are given below:-
- He was head of the UNHCR office in Singapore from 1981 to 1984. During this period he led an important U.N. rescue operation at Sea and succeeded in resettling Vietnamese refugees.
- He was the Deputy chief of the UNHCR Secretariat from 1985 to 1989.
- He was the Special assistant for the United States and UN for peacekeeping from 1989 to 1996.
- He was the Executive assistant to the secretary- general from 1997 to 2000.
- He was the Under-secretary-general for communications and public information from 2001 to 2007.
In 2006, Shashi Tharoor officially contested for the post of of U.N. Secretary General. Though he received widespread support from Asian and African Group of countries, but he failed in getting the support from five Veto power countries.
Veto power countries nominated Ban Ki Moon of South Korea as their consensus candidate for the post U.N. Secretary General and they have succeeded in installing him for this post.
Just after his defeat, Shashi Tharoor has resigned from the United Nations and started working as a chairman of an investment company based in the United Arab Emirates.
In 2009, he has joined in Indian National Congress party and contested from Trivandrum Parliamentary constituency and won the election with thumping majority.
He has contested from Trivandrum parliamentary constituency in 2009, 2014 and 2019 and all these times he has won the election with a good majority.
Considering his widespread experience in diplomacy, on 28 May 2009, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appointed him as an External Affairs Minister (State) of India. But on 18 April 2010 he resigned from the central ministry after being faced an allegation that he had misused his office to get shares in the IPL cricket franchise.
He is a good writer and an author of many fictions and non-fiction books that are widely popular in India and across the world. He is a finest orator, good parliamentarian and his superb ability to use top class English is unimaginable.
Shashi Tharoor is a charismatic person, genius, intelligent, versatile , good orator and a good debater. He is having wide range knowledge about the international politics.
Indian National Party has to utilize his caliber in a bigger manner to enable him to contribute lot for the country in future.
