Sushma Swaraj’s outstanding contributions towards India will be remembered forever

Former Foreign affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj was born on 14 February 1952 at Ambala Cantonment, Haryana. Her father name was Hardev Sharma and mother name was Shrimati Laxmi Devi. She was an advocate and started her Law practice in the Supreme Court in 1973.

Sushma Swaraj was a courageous politician with wide range leadership qualities. At the age of 25 she became the youngest cabinet minister of Haryana Government and she was in the power with effect from 1977 to 1979.

In 1998 Sushma Swaraj became the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi and she ruled the state only 52 days. Just after 52 days, she forced to reliquish the power due to political reasons, subsequently Sheila Dikshit became the Chief Minister of Delhi.


Sushma Swaraj was a Union Cabinet Minister of Information and Broadcasting in Atal Bihari Bajpayee’s cabinet from 16 May 1996 to 1st June 1996. During this shorter period she has taken vigorous efforts in liberating Indian film Industry by declaring the film making sector as an industry and giving it the eligibility to grant bank loans.

Prior to becoming India’s External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj served as the Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha  from 2009 to 2014. While being an Opposition Leader, she had an excellent opportunity to meet various world leaders whenever they were visiting in India. This political experience significantly improved her understanding in world affairs and also helped her to develop a personal rapport with many important global dignitaries.


Surshma Swaraj was India’s External Affairs Minister with effect from 26 May 2014 to 24 May 2019. She was also the second female External Affairs Minister of India after Indira Gandhi who was the first female External Affairs Minister of India.


While Sushma Swaraj was serving as an External Affairs Minister of India she visited various countries and tried her level best to improve the bilateral relationship with them. During her external affairs ministerial tenure she held round-table conference with all the Indian heads of missions to the SAARC region, ASEAN region and Middle East region separately as a follow up measures to carry forward the leads gained by high-profile visits and exchanges.


She has taken excellent and timely initiative in saving hundreds of Indian people when they trapped in other nations due to internal conflicts as well as war with other countries. Her human touch with the suffering Indians as well as other country people was widely appreciated by the international communities. She was indeed a people’s minister who worked relentlessly for the nation.

Sushma Swaraj carried out remarkable supervision of the large-scale evacuation of people during a crisis in Yemen. In this operation 4,741 Indian nationals as well as 1,947 people from 48 countries were rescued under operation ‘Raahat’. Similar operations were carried out in Libya and Iraq as well.

Sushma Swaraj was not only extending her helping hand for Indians but also jumped to the aid of the Pakistani people. She immensely helped several Pakistani people to get an Indian visa for various medical reasons from open-heart surgery to a liver transplant.

Sushma Swaraj was an excellent Orator, having good diplomatic skill and she was popularly known as the Iron Lady of India. In 2004, she became the first lady who was honoured with the outstanding Parliamentarian Award in the year 2004.

Considering her exceptional and distinguished service towards the country, she was awarded Padma Vibhushan that is a highest civilian award in India after the Bharat Ratna. She was a good Minister, excellent Parliamentarian, great nationalist and a queen among the women politicians.
