Every year Engineer’s Day celebrates in India on 15th September and this years also India has celebrated the same on 15th September 2021.
Engineer’s Day basically observed to acknowledge the Engineer’s outstanding efforts and contributions to provide comfortable life for the human being.
15th September is the birth day of India’s greatest Engineer, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. India celebrates “Engineer’s Day ” on this particular day to honour him as well as to pay tribute to India’s finest Civil Engineer M. Visvesvaraya who contributed lot for the country’s nation building process. He is now the role model of Indian people.
He was the most prolific Civil Engineer, expert in building, Dams, economists, statesman and was one of the foremost nation builder in the 19th century.
Considering his vast contributions towards the country, Indian Government awarded him with the highest possible civilian honour – Bharat Ratna in 1955 for his outstanding contributions to industrial, economic, and social projects.
Every year, while celebrating Engineers day, engineering colleges in India are conducting wide varieties of functions for the Engineers and to facilitate their engineering students.
Engineers are contributing lot for the nation building process and they the backbone of every country in the world. In such situation it is highly important to celebrate Engineer’s day in an elaborate manner to mark the respect for their vast contribution towards the country.
While M. Visvesvaraya was working in the Indian Irrigation Commission, he carried out an effective irrigation techniques in the Deccan area.
He was the main instrumental in bringing up an effective flood protection system in Hyderabad while he was working as a Chief Designing Engineer.
He was the main instrumental in designing automatic barrier water floodgates in India. At first he designed and installed the floodgates at the Khadakvasla Reservoir in Pune in 1903. Later similar floodgates he designed and installed at Tigra Dam and Krishna Raja Sagara Dam.
He chas arried out outstanding contributions for controlling the flood in Hyderabad by using various techniques of the water supply system and the drainage system.
Visvesvaraya’s knowledge and ideas immensely helped in saving the Vishakhapatnam port from sea erosion. To control the sea erosion, he has suggested to sink two ships to enable the sunken ships to act as breakwaters to arrest the littoral drift problem to the inner harbour.
Visvesvaraya was the main architect to construct Krishnarajasagara dam and the Brindavan gardens. This dam immensely helped in irrigating more than one hundred throusand acres of land.
Krishnarajasagara dam has changed the water starving landscape of Mandya district into rice stockpile. This dam is also helped in providing drinking water to Mysore and Bangalore areas.
He has contributed lot for harnessing water resources, and he was responsible to building and consolidation of dams in different part of India .
He was a hard working person and never sit idle at his olden age. He was even busy in designing and advising the government for building dams across rivers even at the age of 90. He passed away on 12th April 1962 at the age of 102 years.
