The soccer legend Pelé was born Pelé was born in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil on 23 October 1940. His exact name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento.
Pele was a finest soccer player Brazil has ever produced and he is widely regarded as the greatest player of all time. He was a member of all the three Brazilian world cup champion team (in 1958, 1962 and 1970) and he played for Brazil almost two decades.
in 1958, at the age of 17, Pele was performing in the world cup quarter-final, semi-final and final, and become soccer superstar after his sterling performance in this tournament. His excellent performance in the 1958 and 1970 World Cup finals, 1962-1963 Copa Libertadores finals and in the Intercontinental Cup finals has no comparison.
Pele born in a poor family and he grew up with poverty. Though he was suffering from the poverty, still he was systematically developing exceptional soccer skill such as passes, headshots, dribble and shoot with both of his feet and an excellent ball movements in the ground. His finishing at the goal post was extremely fast and remarkable.
His talent helped him to play in a youth soccer squad and later he got a chance to join one of the famous Brazilian soccer clubs Santos.
At the age of 16, while he was playing for Santos club, he got a good opportunity play with various professional players that has helped him to enhance his soccer playing capability and to learn lot of soccer techniques.
At the age of 16 he scored the first professional goal of his career and he displayed outstanding soccer skill while playing a full season league tournament for Santos. This tournament was the real turning point of his soccer life and this tournament helped him to be a member of the national soccer team.
At the age of 17, Pele played for Brazil in the 1958 world cup in Sweden. Throughout this world cup tournament, he displayed outstanding and exceptional soccer skill and his three goals in the semi final against France and two goals in final against Sweden immensely helped Brazilian team winning the 1958 world cup.
In 1962 soccer world cup held in Chile, Pele could not be able to play all the matches due to the aggravated groin injury that has forced him to sit out of the final rounds. But still Brazil won its second world cup soccer title.
In 1966 world cup soccer tournament held in England, Pele suffered lot from the leg injuries that was inflicted by his opposing defenders. In this tournament the final match was contested by England and West Germany, with England winning 4–2 after extra time to claim the Jules Rimet Trophy.
In 1970 world cup soccer tournament held in Mexico, Brazilian team once again marked a triumphant return to glory for Pelé and the formidable Brazil. Throughout this tournament Pelé scored four goals including one in the final to give Brazil a 4-1 victory over Italy.
While he was playing for the country, he was keep on playing for Santos club. They generated lot of money by scheduling lucrative exhibition matches with teams around the world by utilizing Pele’s star attraction.
Considering his vast contribution towards international Soccer, in 1999, he was named FIFA’s “Co-Player of the Century” along with Argentine Diego Maradona. he was also voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).
Pele retired from the soccer in 1974 but later he returned back to soccer and played for New York Cosmos club. His entry in the Cosmos club has literally kick started American professional soccer. Since then Cosmos club played lot of exhibition matches in different part of the world including in India.
In India they played against Mohun Bagan at the Eden Gardens and the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Pele was the star attraction in this match and thousands of Indian people rushed to the stadium to see their soccer legend Pele.
On 1st October, 1977 Pele played his last soccer friendly match between Pele’s Cosmos team and his last Brazilian team Santos FC. Cosmos won the match by 2-1 goals and finally retired from the International soccer.
Throughout his International Soccer career he scored 1281 goals in 1363 games which is still an unbreakable record. Under his able and efficient leadership, Brazilian team has won many Football championships.
Even though he retired from International Soccer, he remained as a popular football player and actively participated in many professional arenas.
Pele served as Brazil’s Extraordinary Minister for Sport and a United Nations ambassador for ecology and the environment. He was awarded the International Peace Award for his work with UNICEF in 1978.
