South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela was born on 18th July 1918 in the village of Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. To mark the respect of his birthday, every year international communities are observing his birth anniversary as an International Nelson Mandela Day.
Nelson Mandela was the President of South Africa from 10th May 1994 to 14 June 1999. He was the first black President of South Africa and he referred as the Father of the Nation.
Prior to become President of South Africa, he fought about 67 years for the democracy and social justice for the people of South Africa.
Nelson Mandela was an excellent leader, statesman and a global icon of anti-apartheid movements. He has dedicated his entire life for fighting peacefully against the apartheid to get the sovereign rights of the South African people.
Apartheid was a worst political system in South Africa that was meant for dividing the people into racial groups and to keep them apart by law. Apartheid law has caused widespread divisions among the people between races and ethnic groups.
While apartheid regime was ruling in South Africa, the country was in the grip of a worst civil war that has caused the death of thousands of innocent people.
While leading decade long anti apartheid struggle, Nelson Mandela was always been promoting forgiveness and equality. His endless anti-apartheid struggle created lot of political impact on South Africa’s apartheid regime that has forced Apartheid regime to put Nelson Mandela in jail about 27 years.
During his decade long life in various jails, he has come across many kinds of humiliation, tortures and inhuman treatments. But the determined Nelson Mandela never gave up his struggle. Finally due to the growing domestic and international political pressure he was released from Prison in 1990.
In 1993 he has been awarded Nobel Price for his vehement efforts for ending apartheid and his tireless efforts for preserving peace and harmony in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in 1994 and he was in the power till 1999 . Even after becoming the president of South Africa, he did not show any vengeance towards those National Party leaders and their ruthless officials who have ill treated him many years.
Instead, he was always thinking about the bright future of the country and promoting for peace, harmony, political and cultural reconciliation.
During his 5 years Presidential tenure, he encouraged the people to reconcile with the past, bury the grudges, and set the best example himself by working closely with former enemies to setup up his new government. He was vehemently working to avoid a split in his country apart on racial lines.
Because of Nelson Mandela’s determined and vehement efforts, South Africa is still proudly raising its flag as a democratic and multiracial society.
